The Most Underrated Skill in Youth Soccer

Published on May 8, 2018

What do you think is the most underrated and overlooked skill that soccer players don’t practice enough?

Answer: A quality first touch is arguably the single most important skill in soccer!

The topic of first touch and controlling the ball is not a “sexy” or flashy topic such as shooting and 1v1 attacking. Without a good first touch, none of that is possible.

Although it might not be the most exciting skill to work on, it is instrumental in becoming an elite soccer player. A perfect first touch is something that all great players have in common regardless of position or playing style.

Without a good first touch, a player will not be able to control the ball well enough to keep possession and do anything with the ball other than turn it over to the other team. The first touch will make the second touch easier which allows the player to play the ball quickly (in possession), beat a player 1v1, and score goals.

When a player doesn’t have a good first touch or isn’t confident on the ball, what is the first thing they do when the ball comes to them?

Kick it away in a panic as fast as possible (usually to the other team). I don’t care how far or beautiful the kick was.. if possession was not kept then its a turnover and turnovers are BAD!

Having a quality first touch will elevate your daughter to play at a higher level, and I want to help her get there.

Working on having a good first touch will be the sole focus of our May clinic- and there’s a good reason why it is the first topic in our clinic series.

Your daughter isn’t going to leave the clinic with the first touch of Alex Morgan. But, what I will guarantee, is  that she will see improvements during the clinic, and more importantly, she will leave with the tools necessary to practice and improve on her own!

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.
