Top 3 leadership qualities for youth soccer players

Published on September 20, 2018

In my opinion, leadership is one of the most important skills your daughter will learn while playing soccer- it will translate to every area of her life going forward.

Being a leader is not about having power. it’s about leading a group of people to achieve a common goal.

Even if your daughter doesn’t want to be in a  leadership role right now, she should learn the qualities to become a good leader as she will need these qualities when the time comes.

Here are my top 3 qualities of a great leader:

  1. Great communicator

Not only do you need to be confident in communicating to the team and your coach, but you must also be an expert listener..

One common misconception with leadership is that in order to be a good leader you have to be loud and extroverted.

That could not be more far from the truth.

You will need to know how to communicate and not be afraid to communicate but if you are an introvert, don’t let that scare you away from the coming a leader on your team!

  1. Genuine Enthusiasm/Passion

No one wants to follow a leader that doesn’t care about the team.

As a leader, you need to be passionate and enthusiastic. It’s important to have a good attitude as much as possible. If you are positive, your teammates will mirror that same attitude, and same goes if you are negative.

So be aware that your attitude  and work ethic affects the entire team.

  1. Selflessness

The best leaders are those that will do anything to help their teammates and make sacrifices to make that happen.

Realize that as a leader, it’s okay to not know all the answers…

…there will be times when you need to lead, and times when you need to follow.

The best leader will put their egos aside and have the teams best interest at heart.

Great leaders are hard to come by…

…start working on these things now so that when you are done playing soccer you’ll be an expert at being a leader!
